WHO WE ARE
Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) is a democratic, non-partisan, non-sectarian mass movement of professional students of Ghana. The union’s outlook embraces all democratic, revolutionary, progressive ideals and principles including those against imperialism, poverty, corruption, racism, tribalism, illiteracy, for national development and socio economic advancement.
The motto of the union is ‘FOSTERING UNITY' and its slogan is

HISTORY
The Ghana Union of Professional Students which began as a Society for Professional Institute (SPI) in the 1990’s had tertiary institutions like the Institute of Professional Studies now UPSA, the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), The National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) , Ghana Institute of Languages ( GIL) and other professional institutes as it founding members.
The then Society for Professional Institute (SPI ) evolved through constitutional and structural adjustment to become the Ghana Union of Professional students in 2001 after more professional universities had been ratified into her fold. Currently, the union remains the single and largest umbrella body of professional students in the country. GUPS is now made up of 15 ratified institutions and is headquartered in the former PWD building adjacent the Independence Square, Accra.
STRUCTURES
For the effective functioning of the union, there is a five hierarchy of authority namely:
A. The Congress
B. The General Assembly (G.A)
C. The National Executive Committee (NEC)
D. The National Officers (Secretariat)
E. Judicial Board
The Congress is the highest decision making body of the union and is convened once every year to transact important businesses that relate to the development of the union.

The General Assembly is the legislative organ of the union and its responsible for running the affairs of the union between congresses .

The National Executive Committee
The National Executive Committee (NEC) is made up of six national secretariat members and all SRC president or their representatives. NEC meets once every three months to deliberate on matters arising at the secretariat and any other business it deems necessary.

The National Secretariat is made up of national officers who are elected by congress to formulate and execute programs that shall ensure the smooth administration of the union.

The Judicial Board
The Judicial Board is a five member board of the union whose members are called Justices. The basic function of the Judicial board is to interpret and enforce the GUPS constitution and adjudicate on matters of dispute relating to GUPS.

For the smooth running of the union, the General Assembly of GUPS constitute itself into standing and Ad-hoc committees responsible for executing constitutional and specific tasks.
NATIONAL EXECUTIVES
President
The Current President of the Union is Kennedy Kwasivi Dorgbetor, a final year Banking and Finance student of the University of Professional Studies as well as a student of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
He is a product of Kintampo Senior High School and a staunch Christian. His leadership style is goal oriented and a unifier.
The General Secretary
The current General Secretary is a Product of Mfantsipim School and the former Attorney General of GIJ SRC. He is the administrative head of the union and the second in command in hierarchy. Benjamin Alpha Aidoo is a third year student of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
The Treasurer
Emmanuel Lewis Akpa is a final year marketing student of the University of Professional Studies. He is the custodian of the union’s assets. He is a team player and a strong proponent of financial discipline.
Coordinating Secretary
Irene Wirekoaa Osei is the coordinating secretary of the union. As coordinating secretary she is the administrative secretary of the union and responsible for coordinating all GUPS local secretariat and organizing them for GUPS activities. Irene holds a B.A in Communication Studies (Journalism) from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and is a service personnel at the National Media Commission.
Women’s Commissioner
Nancy Nana Araba Aggrey is the Women’s Commissioner of the Union. She is currently pursuing a Diploma in Communication Studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. She has working experience at Life Fm Nkawkaw and Denkyenbour Fm in Akwatia both in the Eastern Region of Ghana. She is responsible for coordinating women in the union in helping them realize their potentials and developing their skills.
Press and Informtion Secretary
Bernice Alorgbe as the Press and Information Secretary is the link between the union and the media. She is a third year Journalism student at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. She has stints with GraphicCommunications (The Mirror). She is a social entrepreneur who believes in volunteerism as a means of national development.

Programs and Project Coordinating Secretary
Aluu K. Philip is the Programs and Project coordinator responsible for carrying out all programs and activities of the union. He holds an HND in Social Works from the School of Social Works.
Financial Controller
Eric Owusu Ansah is the financial controller and strategist of the union. He holds a B.A in Business Administration from the University of Professional Studies Accra. And is a student member of the Institute of Chartered Accountant Ghana.
International Relations Secretary
Asante Kissi Eleazor is the International Relations Secretary of GUPS, he is the dynamic factor in the unions relations with other professional bodies abroad. He is a product of the School of Social Works and has considerable knowledge in student related international matters.
